What do you like most about the PR business? The constant challenge. Every client is like a jigsaw puzzleyou know you can put the pieces together, but the fun is in finding the most effective way to make it all fall into place. What is the secret of your success? Willingness to pick up the phone and talk to anyone about (almost) anything. Also, being about to understand each client and what he needs is key, instead of handling him from the point of view of what my personality dictates he should want. How did you get into PR? I was helping out a friend who was in the PR biz. He couldnt find anyone with a financial background who could pitch the financial media. I have a strong financial background so dove inand found it to be exciting!! I find PR to be a more personable and interesting way to participate in the financial industry. I would rather be talking to people than analyzing balance sheets! What is you motto? The truth always comes out (but you cant be passive about it, if its not apparent, you need to make it known)! What is your biggest PR pet peeve? Complicated PR mumbo jumbo that fluffs up and confuses the client, but that doesnt produce results. The ideas behind PR are simple and powerfultheres no need to add complexity. What is the last book your read? Contemporary Orthodontics. Let me explainfour different orthodontists gave me four different opinions for my daughters treatmentfrom do nothing to jaw surgery. I got so frustrated I decided to read the authority on the subject. You can image how puzzled the fifth orthodontist was when I came armed with knowledge and had a discussion with him about bites and courses of treatment. He was shocked when I told him I had read the textbook. Favorite CD? Lately it has been a Japanese drum and bamboo flute CD by Kodo. If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be? GhandiI really admire the spirituality of India and find Ghandi an incredible figure. It is amazing how he could rally the masses through his strong convictionswhat a great PR person! What do your friends say is your best characteristic? Doing what is rightnot what will win a popularity contest. What is a funny thing that happened lately? My other daughter, 9, was recently in Rome. There is a fountain where the superstition goes that if you throw in two coins you will get to visit Rome again. My daughter turned to her grandmother and asked, If I put in four coins will I get to come back first class? |
